PRODUCT REVIEW - GNAR LUBE
Gnar Lube has been on a seeming media barnstorm of late, and they caught our attention with their "How to Lube your Chain" video. (Here) After our eyes settled back into their sockets, we began to wonder if there was more to Gnar Lube than scantily clad models. Gnar Lube offers Dry, Wet, and a new all purpose lube with an economy minded price point. The family of products claim superior lubrication properties, scents inspired by professional dancers (we guess the pole variety), magic unicorn dust and other things.
The Good: Upon receipt of our shipment we instantly dug in and pulled out PINK DELICACY which is their DRY lube offering. We hit our Trail, DH, an DJ bike with a good chain cleaning and an application of Gnar Lube. The first thing you will notice - probably before even opening the product - is the extremely fragrant note of Gnar Lube. This is not your typical lubricant smell, unless you jump from the bike category into the bedroom. For us the smell was so inviting, that we began looking for things to lube and even convinced ourselves that our drivetrains seemed smoother, even though we had yet to hit the trails. On the trail we were very pleased with the action of our drivetrains and surprised that even after a couple rides, our bikes and garage still smelled of Gnar Lube. During our recent wet weather period we cleaned our chains and applied BLUE OPAL the wet weather/extreme conditions formula. Mud and trail sludge did not seem to phase it and we did not feel like the chain action was as gritty as we normally experience in inclement weather. Wanting to make sure that we were not experiencing strange placebo effects from the coconut fragrance of BLUE OPAL, we called on a friend of TheDirtyWheel. We placed product in the hands of Johnny Flores, customer service guru/do-it all at INTENSE CYCLES. Johnny is a bike mechanic, past shop-owner, and solid source of bike opinion and know how. After a couple weeks we got a text giving his simple but endorsing feedback "Well it stayed very clean. Grinding Sensation of a dirty chain took a few rides to develop instead of the by the end of the ride. Smells like the beach." That is probably the best way to sum it up although if you would like the technical differences between their different offerings, you can hit their website. The Bad: It was honestly very hard to come up with an area where we felt the product did not deliver on the manufacturers claims. We have not been able to try the GANG GREEN economy version or the BLACK SAPPHIRE race offerings but we are confident in how they would perform. We would have given Gnar Lube 5 stars based solely on our experience and preferences, but we feel that some people may actually find the scents to be too much. It's nit-picky but we can see it putting off some consumers. (Did we mention we love it!)
